Noema (from Greek νόημα, “thought”, “concept”, “idea”) is an online magazine (ISSN 2283-3145) exploring the relationships between technology, science, culture, and society. Founded in 2000 — with roots going back to 1994, when a group from the University of Bologna launched NetMagazine/MagNet, the first online magazine in Italy — Noema has spent twenty-six years as a reference point for the analysis of cultural transformations at the intersection of art, science, media, and the environment. Its international network of authors, its Scientific Committee and Advisory Board, and its long-standing partnerships — including with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (SciArt project) and the European Media Art Platform (EMAP) — reflect a commitment to rigorous, transdisciplinary inquiry. Noema welcomes contributions from researchers, artists, critics, curators, and practitioners across all disciplines.

01 Sep 2026 CFP: MULTISENSORY XR: From ‘Tech for Good’ to Ethical Immersive Experience

We invite 20-minute papers and project-led presentations from across the arts, humanities, social sciences, design, creative practice, health sciences, computing and industry research. Submissions may address artistic work, design processes, social and cultural analysis, education, healthcare, accessibility, platform politics or emerging forms of multisensory interaction. We are particularly interested in work that challenges ocularcentrism, questions established ideas of immersion or proposes alternatives to proprietary platform models. The key goal of the conference is to explore XR that not only works but that works for diverse users and in different configurations of sensory experience. In other words, we want to showcase XR that not only succeeds technically and artistically but also delivers ethical and social value.

04 Sep 2026 Inter/national fellowship: Living Document @ Scula Piccola Zattere

Scuola Piccola Zattere welcomes applications for the selection of two participants in its fellowship programme, taking place as part of the institution’s third season of activities, titled Living Document. The open call aims to select two fellows who will carry out their artistic and/or research practice for three months at Scuola Piccola Zattere in Venice during one of the following periods:

•⁠ ⁠Early January – early April 2027 •⁠ ⁠Mid-April – mid-July 2027

The international fellowship is intended for artists and cultural practitioners—including curators, researchers, architects, choreographers, performers, and writers—working outside the Venetian area, both elsewhere in Italy and internationally. It offers dedicated time and space to focus on ongoing research and projects, while engaging with the Scuola’s artistic community and experiencing Venice’s rich cultural landscape.

The twelfth edition is open to candidates from anywhere in the world writing in Chinese or English about any contemporary art exhibition held anywhere in the world or on-line between September 1, 2025 and 31 August 2026. Candidates are invited to write a review of 1,500 English words or 2,500 Chinese characters on any exhibition of contemporary art. The submissions shall not previously have been published anywhere else.

The First Prize will consist of a cash award of 10,000 Euros (pre-tax) or the RMB equivalent of this amount (currently, around 80,000 RMB). There will be three Second Prizes, each amounting to 3,500 Euro (pre-tax) or the RMB equivalent of around 30,000 RMB.

27 Sep 2026 Situated Research Residences 2027 - Medialab Matadero

Medialab Matadero presents the fifth edition of its annual Situated Research Residency program.

Through this open call, Medialab will select 3 research and creation projects capable of exploring the relationships between contemporary art, design, science, technology, and society, with a critical, experimental approach open to collaboration.

We are looking for proposals that sit at the margins or intersections of disciplines, methodologies, and ‘knowledges’. Inspired by the principle of learning by doing, the residency aims to foster new ways of researching, prototyping, documenting, sharing knowledge, or mobilizing communities around relevant issues.

Submitted projects must connect explicitly and coherently with one or more of the themes from Medialab Matadero’s recent programs: LAB 1 Medios Sintientes, LAB 2 The Metabolic Sublime, LAB 3 Synthetic Minds, LAB 4 Weird Futures, and LAB 5 The Mechanics of Truth.

The residency will run from January to July 2027 and carries a stipend of €10,000 (before tax).
